I sewed a boat handbag

I fear I do not have any good photos of when I sewed a boat hat for Seattle Public Theater Youth Program.

Oh wait I do have one

In this tradition, we now have a boat handbag
and it went to Seattle Public Theater to see a how
An hour into its day, it had already lost its front anchors.
Many pieces were reduced to a few. I used the patterns (traced them off) as a jumping off point for my more ship specific idea. Also invented the smoke stacks (that's where cardboard models are super handy). The placement of the pieces on the original tissue was organized by sets for tracing them directly onto bag material. I traced everything a little closer; and I meant to take photos of that, but they were blurry and bad.

And now, loads of process photos
This is my only real tip for handbag construction: it's sculpture. You want to make a model of less precious materials. In this case, I used paperboard (Costco puts this stuff on the top of pallets and it's really useful) and staples.

I also recommend lots of tiny bulldog clips. The dents they put into the vinyl disappeared quickly.

I traced the pattern from the sheet, adapted it for my ship
and traced those pieces onto my vinyl.

Clipmania!

This project went really well, much better than I expected.

Joann's marine grade vinyl sews really easily by hand or machine: 10/10 from me
A small bag of sand is a handy weight that conforms to weird shapes. Will use this again.

Handsewn smoke stack. I added some glue to reinforce the stitches later.

There are just going to be a thousand clips in service on this project

Drafted and sewed a lining
Marked the magnet snap center point with a hole

The magnet is sewn into that poorly shaped triangle at the left on the flap

Decided a rivet was a faster metal thing to magnet to
Sewed the lining to the top of the hull.
The instructions are full of hot glueing stuff together, but sewing this stuff was really easy.
that rectangular hole is how you reach into the bag. Cause it is a bag.

Handsewed the deck/cabin flap to the hull
It got some grommets and a rope handle
A wheel and it's own iceberg
By the time it got to the theater, it had lost its anchors

I am exceedingly pleased with myself in a really annoying manner.

MiniKennie Love - Will it chain stitch?????????

https://youtu.be/ilBC2ykaFuE

I am pretty sure I have never yelled that loud at a video in my life.

Of course, now I don't really need a basting machine, but still I have all the parts......!!!!!!!!!

Not long enough
but...

All in all, a nice little sewing machine

This post is pretty much gold on the topic. Lots of 'this worked for me' details that I don't think you get with a video

Summer Cosplay Ideas 2022 That Sinking Feeling

I gotta hand it to Schewe, she got four films into one set (and proved that they were all the same dress at heart)

I have a copy of this somewhere
and I have one of these, for a costume I was supposed to make.

I did just buy this one
because I need that overblouse and I like Clayton's work a lot.

or i could just phone it in with another handbag

And yes, the ship bag is why I bought this pattern. Twice.

Speaking of bags, version A has been reborn

Lifeguard hut to clever cabana (love the bag dangles)

I was a lackluster participant in the vintage pattern lending library's  2012/1912 Titanic sewing pattern event.

(it's interesting that I cannot find much of anything about something that so consumed my brain at the time)

I never finished the blouse.
Damn kids ate up all my time.
I did "meet" Cation Designs online because of that, which makes it a lucky event for me.

but why this sinking cosplay thinking? why now?

Coming this month to a Green Lake theater near me and I have a front row ticket.

It's Just Not Going To Happen: My Dress Pattern Breakups

It's just not going to happen and I have to let it go. Breaking up is hard to do.

arrow points to protrusion, black line is front seam

The Felix - Lobster time Edition

I chased the trouble around this dress in several mock-ups: the front V is too deep for me (I am short) and in adjusting that,  the protruding 'fin' on the front has remained or grown.

I have determined that the fin is caused by the collar not being wide enough on the back of the neck: I have grown a little fat pad back there, I have a wider neck anyway, and the facing is pulling the front of the skirt up at the center, developing that fin effect. You can't see it on the dress form, but you can see it on me

Also the new version is just unflattering. It just is.

I can reedit the pattern, but I'm.... tired of it. The inset contrast collar is genius, and to edit that further makes it poorly proportioned. It looks goofy. I've put two finished dresses and countless hours in and I'm just done.

although god knows I did edit the collar anyway

This style arc dress

I am not even sure I kept photos of the toile. The skirt is too big,  the bodice/top sticks out. It's just poor fabric choice on my part; the pattern needs fabric with drape. I really don't need another dress pattern that needs drapy fabric. I already have quite a few. I need a pattern that will make up in novelty cotton for the summer. A large amount of my stash is novelty cotton waiting for shirts or dresses. While I am ditching this pattern for this purpose, I'm keeping the front seams where the pockets go in another dress idea fermenting in my brain.

This self drafted unnamed dress
I'm just not having it here. I have grown, it's too small, I am going to alter it to get it to fit (adding a wedge under the arms) because the original Mystery Food octo print is so nice, and the fabric is really soft. I think the front seams from the Sydney and the curved yoke of this are going to have a party baby

Tokyobots dress gets and loses a collar. It was resting in the WIP box but writing about the fails made it come out and join the party. On a similar note, am I the only person who organizes sewing around 'what else do I have in progress that uses this color of thread?'
I doubt I am alone in this.
And I finished it. I like the faced hem. It's a fun print. And this design is done. Maybe it will get a work selfie. We'll see.
I'm just tired of all my previous ideas right now.
